General

  • Who can meet at Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman House?

    Not-for-profit and educational groups that support activities such as lifelong learning, music, art, drama, literature, and health may use the buildings. William Butterworth Foundation sites may not be used for activities that carry on propaganda or attempt to influence legislation. The Executive Director determines the appropriateness of an event at the time a reservation is made.


    The Paid Rental Policy became effective January 1, 2023. Exclusive wedding packages at Butterworth Center and reception add-ons are offered. 
The Deere-Wiman House is not available for weddings.


  • Can we have the meeting space set up to meet our needs?

    We offer several standard set-ups that work effectively in our historic spaces and meet the safety and comfort needs of our community groups. We may be able to accommodate some requests for modifications when staffing and resources are available. Set-ups should be discussed at the time of reservation and confirmed at least one week prior to your meeting.

  • What audio/visual equipment do you provide?

    Most meeting spaces can be set up with an LCD projector, screen, cart, extension cord and/or TV/DVD player. There is a large screen television in the Butterworth Center Library. Groups must bring their own laptop.


  • Is smoking/vaping permitted?

    All buildings are smoke-free and nicotine-free. There are smoking areas marked with appropriate cigarette disposal containers located near each building. Please ask staff for locations.

  • May our group store belongings in the buildings between meetings?

    Groups may not store supplies, food, etc. at our facilities between meetings.

  • Are your facilities accessible?

    Our two historic homes, Butterworth Center and 

    Deere-Wiman House, are equipped with large exterior lifts from ground levels to the first floors for those using wheelchairs, requiring assistance, or avoiding stairs. Both homes also have small historic elevators. Visitors to the Deere-Wiman Carriage House and Butterworth Education Center enter and meet at ground level.  The restrooms in Butterworth Education Center are fully accessible.

  • Are candles allowed?

    Due to safety concerns, lighted candles are not permitted.

  • Are the meeting rooms equipped with Wi-Fi?

    The Library, Orchid Room and Oak Room at Butterworth Center, as well as the Education Center and Carriage House, have access to Wi-Fi.

  • Do you offer tours of the houses, and if so, how much do they cost?

    Guided tours (except for holidays) are offered on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays beginning at the Deere-Wiman House at 2:30p. Register for the free tours on the homepage. Donations are appreciated.


    Tours for groups of 10 or larger are offered by appointment, weekdays. Contact gsmall@butterworthcenter.com or 309-743-2701.

    Price for group tours is $5 per house, per person.


    Sunday guided tours are available by registering on the homepage, the first Sunday of the Month, and July through August. Check the calendar for availability.


  • What kitchen equipment do you provide?

    All meeting spaces offer access to coffee makers, coffee filters, refrigerators, ovens, and microwaves. The kitchens in Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman House are equipped with silverware, assorted serving pieces, china, silver coffee and tea pots, thermal coffee and tea pots, punch bowl and ladle, glassware, assorted glass serving bowls, serving trays, dish cloths and towels. Groups are expected to wash any equipment used. Groups may bring their own disposable tableware, if preferred.

  • Do you have easels with large tablets of paper?

    Yes. Please request easels and tablets at the time you make a reservation.

  • Do you provide catering?

    Community groups are welcome to cater their events. Please consider your catering requirements when booking your reservation. We cannot accept deliveries on your behalf or provide storage outside of your reservation space and times

  • Where can we park?

    Two parking lots are located near the corner of 8th Street and 11th Avenue in Moline; street parking is also available along 11th and 12th Avenues.

  • How are you funded?

    Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman House are privately owned sites operated by the William Butterworth Foundation. We receive no financial support from the City of Moline or Deere & Company.

Not-for-Profit and Educational Use

  • May we collect membership dues or raise funds for our organization during our meetings?

    Yes.  Facilities may be used for fundraising activities within your group’s primary membership, not open to the general public, including paid events (e.g., luncheons, speakers, workshops), licensed raffles, silent auctions, and sale of items or products.

  • May we charge a fee to our members for a workshop or luncheon/dinner held at your facilities?

    Yes.  Facilities may be used for fundraising activities within your group’s primary membership, not open to the general public, including paid events (e.g., luncheons, speakers, workshops), licensed raffles, silent auctions, and sale of items or products.

  • May we invite the general public to attend our event for a fee?

    No.  Facilities may be used for fundraising activities within your group’s primary membership, not open to the general public, including paid events (e.g., luncheons, speakers, workshops), licensed raffles, silent auctions, and sale of items or products.

  • Our speaker has books and other materials they would like to sell to our membership. Is this allowed?

    Yes.  Facilities may be used for fundraising activities within your group’s primary membership, not open to the general public, including paid events (e.g., luncheons, speakers, workshops), licensed raffles, silent auctions, and sale of items or products.


  • May we serve alcoholic beverages during our meeting/event? 

    No.  Alcoholic beverages may only be served as part of the Paid Rental Policy (effective January 1, 2023).


  • Do you offer virtual meeting (Zoom) capabilities?

    Yes.  We offer hybrid meeting capabilities. Groups may either use their own virtual meeting account or have access to a William Butterworth Foundation Zoom account. Your meeting space will be set up with a TV monitor, camera and microphone to facilitate the virtual component of your meeting.  Please discuss this when you make your reservation. Groups must bring their own laptop if using their own account.



  • May we schedule recitals at Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House?

Paid Rentals

  • May I rent Butterworth Center for a corporate event?

    Gala events for corporations are included in the Paid Rental Policy, effective January 1, 2023.  Contact 309-743-2700, or email rentals@butterworthcenter.com.


    The Deere-Wiman House is not available for  events.


  • May I rent a space or use the grounds for a birthday party or graduation party?

    No. Rentals are limited to wedding packages and galas for not-for-profits and corporations. Other types of personal and family events are prohibited


  • May we serve alcoholic beverages during our rental?

    Yes.  Alcohol may be served only as outlined in the Paid Rental Policy.

Photography

  • I would like to take photos of the Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House and the grounds to sell commercially. Is this allowed?

    No. Photography of the grounds and houses for the purpose of commercial sale is prohibited.

  • I am an amateur photographer.  May I bring my family to the Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House grounds to take photos?

    Yes.  Amateur photography (e.g., family photos, nature photos, prom photos) on the grounds is allowed without reservations. 

  • May I take photos inside Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House during a tour or event or during a meeting I am attending?

    Yes.  Personal photography is allowed in the house without the use of flash only during tours, events and meetings.


Service Animals

  • Do you allow service animals at Butterworth Center & Deere Wiman House?

    Service animals have access to the public areas of Butterworth Center, Deere-Wiman House, the 

    Butterworth Education Center and the Deere-Wiman Carriage House as defined under the guidelines of the American Disability Act (ADA). This includes only service animals and does NOT include emotional support or therapy animals.


    Service animals are dogs individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Our staff or volunteers may ask two questions: 


    • Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?


    • What work or task is the dog trained to perform?


    Under the ADA, service animals must always be well behaved and under the control of the owner. If not, the animal must leave the premises.


    Our staff and volunteers are not responsible for the care or supervision of service animals. The owner is responsible for all the animal’s needs, and such needs will not delay or interfere with events held on the premises including tours.
